A Journey to 250 Institutes:

The first Public Library was started by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad(1862-1939) of Baroda in 19th century A.D.This Library was known as The Baroda School.He invited an American librarian WA Borden(1852-1931) to India to create a librarian training program. This program started in 1912 and was the first library education school in India. After this several other schools were started like the Lahore School in 1915,Andhra Desa in 1920,but all of these courses were only for librarians. The first open-for-all course was started by Dr. Rangnathan in 1929.Before Independence only 5 universities-Andhra,BHU,Calcutta,Delhi and Bombay-were offering this course but now this course is offered by 250 universities across the nation giving 7000 Library Science graduates each year.
